Innovation through clinical teamwork

The L1 Rib system design and CB3 technology was inspired by the feedback and advice of clinical experts in the search for a better solution in rib fracture treatment. This product is available for use in the United States. The CB3 technology is patent pending.


Smart shape based on average patient

Each of the products that KLS Martin develops address the same goal, to restore the patient’s bone through uneventful healing after surgery.

Any osteosynthesis solution needs to easily be applied to each rib. This is challenging as each rib’s curvature, length and surface contour varies greatly.

We analyzed the average data and developed a smart shape with complex geometry that was adaptable to each of these variables. 

Simple and adaptable

The two main designs in the L1 Rib system, Z and X shape CB3 plates, are shown here. These smart shape adaptable designs enable the same plates to be applied to any rib shape, decreasing inventory and improving overall system ease of use.

This complex geometry and CB3 screw engagement allows for more screws per area of rib than conventional reconstruction plates, minimizing the footprint of the implant which has handling and functional benefit.

Minimizing footprint enables physical placement in a smaller segment of bone, smaller dissection or retraction area, easier precision in placement. It also frees up the rib for natural movement.

Innovative instruments

The unique challenges of rib fractures  required innovative instrument design.The result is a system that enables the surgeon to contour, secure and fix the plate in position with control and precision while optimizing the advantages of the CB3 design.

A different approach

Traditional bicortical fixation requires careful drilling, depth measurement and screw placement, all of which must consider any risk to the anatomical structures beyond the inner cortex.

CB3 advantage

Shown here is a comparison of CB3 (converging biaxial three dimensional) cortical locking screws vs traditional bicortical screws that may penetrate the inner cortex. Note also that the CB3 requires only one depth of screw vs a series of lengths to match the measured depth of each area of a rib. This simplifies the application and ease of use.

CB3 safety

If desired or necessary due to anatomical requirements, precise placement of screws at the CB3 optimal angle is instrument guided.

maxDriver speed

Screws can be placed very rapidly with the smart maxDriver, a battery operated cordless screwdriver.

ThreadLock TS technology

The Drill Free ThreadLock TS (Taper Screw) design offers a single pitch locking mechanism that allows for up to 20 degrees of angulation in any direction. Only one monocortical screw length is needed due to the unique properties of CB3 osteosynthesis.
